Each has a law.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">Take a habit most of us keep meaning to build, planning tomorrow before you finish today.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class=""><strong>Make it obvious.</strong>&nbsp;A habit needs a trigger. If a habit is a loop, a team habit is a cue everybody shares. Escalation at the same two minutes every morning. The decision written down in the room rather than chased afterwards. A ten minute handover call before someone goes on leave. None of that needs a culture programme. It needs a cue, a small version, and a reason to repeat it.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">Notice what's missing from all of it. The sheet does the explaining, so keep it for when you want the detail. The title says project managers, though it applies to anyone with a hand in delivering something.</p>

It becomes the new normal.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class=""><strong>And your memory doesn't hold on to the old one. You're left with the new normal and no picture of where you started. I've started calling it the fresh paint effect, because it works for you and against you in equal measure.</strong></p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">Going up, it's the best thing about compounding. The gym gets easier, the weight goes up, and the fortnight where it felt impossible is gone. On a programme, a team fixes how problems get raised, and six months on nobody can remember the weeks when everything landed on a Friday afternoon. Each improvement becomes ordinary, which is exactly what frees you to build the next one on top of it. That's how people end up somewhere they could never have planned their way to.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">Going the other way, the same effect quietly takes you apart. Miss a session, skip the handover call, let a decision go unrecorded, and the new standard becomes the standard. This is why never missing twice matters more than it looks. Miss once and your reference point holds, so getting back is easy. Miss twice and it starts to move, and once it has moved far enough you can't picture what good looked like clearly enough to aim at it. Standards rarely collapse. They fade, and people stop because they genuinely can't see what they've lost.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">It happens to whole teams too. Spend three years on the same programme and you absorb its norms without noticing. How quickly problems get raised, how decisions get made, what people let slide. It becomes simply how work is done. Then you move to another programme, find it runs nothing like that, and you can't say when you picked any of it up. A good culture makes you better. A poor one does the same in the other direction, and neither announces itself.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">So that's the model. Make it obvious, attractive, easy and satisfying, and don't miss twice. Everything you repeat, at work and everywhere else, is built out of those four steps, whether you set them up on purpose or not.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">The fresh paint effect sits alongside it, and it's worth knowing about because it can play tricks on you. Once you know your reference point keeps moving, you can see what's actually in front of you, decide which habits you want to keep, and pick the next one worth repeating.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">Full credit to James Clear. He's been in the background ever since, someone to think out loud with when an idea isn't landing. This week he published his own first essay, using HS2 to make the case that sponsors aren't customers of a programme, they set the conditions it succeeds or fails in. Congratulations to him for getting it out there. More people who have actually done the work should write about it, because what gets learnt on the ground rarely travels beyond the people who were standing there. Worth a read if you work anywhere near major programmes.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/posts/pjsimms_recent-discussions-about-hs2-got-me-thinking-activity-7505568107474718721-FsP5" rel="nofollow" style="color:#0e8ac4 !important;">Have a look</a>.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class=""><strong>CHEAT SHEETS</strong></p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">A small example of the fresh paint effect, from me.
