I was in the garden recently, doing that thing where you notice one tiny weed and tell yourself you'll deal with it later.

It was barely anything. A thin green shoot between two plants. Easy to ignore, especially when the rest of the bed looked fine from a distance. So I left it. A week later, there were three of them. Then five.

Then I found myself on a Saturday morning kneeling in the soil, trying to pull out roots that had quietly spread underneath the plants I actually wanted to grow.

That is the bit that gets me about weeds. They rarely arrive looking like a problem. They start small, harmless, almost reasonable. And because the garden still looks tidy enough, you convince yourself it can wait.

Projects have weeds too.

The awkward stakeholder who keeps being left out because the meeting is already full. The decision that keeps being carried from one week to the next. The unclear handover. The small assumption in the plan. The team member who has gone quieter than usual but is still delivering.

The Royal Horticultural Society has a simple line in its advice on weeding beds: weeds compete with cultivated plants for soil moisture, nutrients and light. I like that because it makes the problem visible. The issue is not only that weeds look untidy. They take energy away from what you are trying to grow.

That is exactly what small unresolved issues do on a project.

They compete for attention. They drain trust. They make every future conversation a little heavier than it had to be. A small assumption becomes a clarification meeting. A clarification meeting becomes a delay, and suddenly everyone is wondering why the project feels harder than it should.

Usually, the weed was there weeks earlier.

I've been guilty of this more times than I would like to admit. I have seen something small, felt that quiet tug in my stomach, and left it alone because the week was already full. I told myself it wasn't the priority. I told myself it would probably resolve itself. I told myself I would come back to it once the bigger thing was out of the way.

Sometimes that worked.

More often, it didn't.

Because neglected issues don't stay the same size. They grow into the space you leave for them.

The garden does not sit still either. A wet spell and the weeds race away, faster than anything you planted. A dry month and some of them wither on their own, before you ever reach for them. The conditions decide how fast the problem grows.

Projects have their own weather. A quiet spell and the small issues just sit there, harmless, and you start to believe they were never worth worrying about. Then something bigger goes wrong, the pressure changes, and everything you left in the soil comes up at once.

That is usually when the auditors arrive.

And it is a sight to see. The moment an audit is on the horizon, everyone is suddenly on their knees in the beds, pulling up every loose end, tidying decisions that were left half made, closing the assumptions they had walked past for months. The weeds were never invisible. People just needed a reason to look.

And the difficult part is that weeding rarely feels impressive. Nobody sees the crisis that did not happen because you had the awkward conversation early. Nobody notices the delay that never arrived because you clarified ownership when it was still easy. That is one of the quiet frustrations of good project management. The best work is often invisible.

The garden looks calm because someone has been tending it.

When a project feels under control, people assume it is because the plan is strong or the team is capable. Often, it is also because someone has been quietly pulling weeds before they could take over the bed.

That kind of work takes judgement. It also takes courage, because early weeding can feel slightly dramatic. You are pointing at something that has not yet become visible, and there is always a chance someone looks at you as if you are making a fuss.

I think that is why so many of us leave it.

We are busy. We are trying to stay positive. We don't want to be the person who slows the room down. And if the issue is still small, it is easy to convince yourself that raising it now will create more friction than leaving it alone.

But I have learned to respect the small tug.

Not panic. Not overreact. Just respect it enough to look closer.

There is a difference between seeing weeds everywhere and developing an eye for what might crowd out the work later. One makes you anxious. The other makes you attentive. The best PMs I have worked with are simply good at noticing the early signs.

A phrase that changes tone in a meeting.

A risk that keeps being described in vague language.

A decision where everyone nods but nobody writes down what was actually agreed.

A team member who says "fine" a little too quickly.

Those are shoots in the soil. Sometimes you look closer and realise there is nothing there. Good. Leave it alone. But sometimes you find a root, and dealing with it early is an act of care.

The trick is not to turn every small thing into a full investigation. That would exhaust everyone. The trick is to give small things a small amount of attention early, before they demand a large amount of attention later.

A two-minute clarification. A quiet message after the meeting. A sentence in the action log that makes ownership visible. A direct but kind question: "Are we all using that word in the same way?"

That is often enough.

That is the garden work of project management. Less dramatic than the big rescue. More useful than waiting for the bed to be overrun. The goal is maintenance, not elimination.

Most projects don't fall apart because nobody cared. They struggle because small issues were allowed to compete for light for too long.

Pull the weeds while they are still small.

MAKING IT HAPPEN: Your Weekly Strategy

This week, do a ten-minute weed walk through your project. I know, a weed walk doesn't sound very formal. Stay with me though, the picture is the part that helps.

Pick one area that feels slightly untidy. A decision, a relationship, a handover, a risk, a dependency, anything that keeps catching your attention even though it has not become urgent.

Write down three things: what is the weed, what is it competing with, and what is the smallest useful action I can take this week?

Keep the action small. Clarify one owner. Ask one question. Close one assumption. Have one quiet conversation.

The aim is not to clear the whole garden in one go. The aim is to stop one small thing from stealing light later.
