A few months back I sat in a meeting where a decision had been sitting untouched for three weeks. Everyone agreed it needed making. Nobody moved it. By week three it had grown a personality of its own. People weren't avoiding the decision any more. They were avoiding each other.

That's the pattern I want to talk about this week.

Big stuck things rarely become unstuck because someone finds the perfect answer. They become unstuck because someone finds the small edge that will move. A loose corner. A handle that gives slightly when everyone else has been pushing against the middle of the door.

When something feels blocked, the mind wants to make the whole problem bigger. Why is this so hard. Why does every decision take this long. The actual work disappears behind the frustration, and you're left staring at a door that hasn't moved an inch.

There's a question I've found more useful than any of that. What can I do in the next hour that isn't nothing?

It sounds too small to matter. That's probably why it works.

Back in that meeting, nobody was going to solve the whole disagreement in one sitting. So instead of trying, I asked one person to answer one part of it by midday. Just one part. By the afternoon we had one real answer instead of another three weeks of the same sentence in different clothes.

Nothing dramatic happened. But the door moved.

There's a reason that small a thing was enough. Teresa Amabile at Harvard spent years tracking the daily diaries of 238 people working on real projects across seven companies, nearly 12,000 entries in total. She wanted to know what actually made people feel engaged at work on a given day. It wasn't recognition. It wasn't pay. It was progress, and usually the ordinary kind. A task finished. A problem cracked open a little. A decision that stopped being stuck. Even the smallest forward step changed how people felt about the whole day. A day with no movement at all, even without any setback, left them flat. You don't need the big win to feel like the day mattered. You need evidence that the door moved.

I've watched that hold everywhere since. A team gets stuck on a dependency, or a cost pressure, or a conversation nobody wants to own, and the meeting keeps circling. Everyone knows something has to shift, but the whole shape of it feels too big to touch, so the room waits for a better moment. That moment rarely arrives cleanly. More often, someone just changes the scale of the problem. They stop trying to open the whole door and look for the inch that will move first.

Once it shifts, the next move gets easier to see. A rough note gives people something to react to instead of nothing. A short reply reveals the real objection everyone had been dancing around. Momentum doesn't always arrive before action. Quite often, action is what creates it.

This is where I think most of us get caught. We wait to feel ready before doing the thing that would make us feel ready. We wait for clarity before taking the step that would create the clarity. The next inch cuts through that because it asks so little of you. A full solution wants certainty, energy, timing, maybe a bit of luck. The next inch only wants enough willingness to make one useful mark on the problem.

This isn't only a work pattern. The room that's got out of hand. The message you've been avoiding. The habit that slipped for a week and started to feel like evidence about who you are. Look at the whole thing and you'll talk yourself out of moving. Ask for the next inch and the problem gets more honest. Open the letter. Send the one line reply. Write the ugly first paragraph. Book the appointment.

Small doesn't mean soft, by the way. Sometimes the smallest useful move is the uncomfortable one, because it's the one that shows you don't know something yet, or makes a hidden tension visible. There's a reason we reach for more analysis when the action in front of us has a social cost. Careful delay can dress itself up as good judgement. Sometimes it genuinely is. Often it's just a respectable place to hide.

Earlier in my career I thought progress had to look more impressive than this. I wanted the clean answer, the tidy meeting, the decision everyone nodded at together. I still like those moments. But most of delivery isn't cinematic. It's patient contact with the actual problem. Touch the edge. Test what moves. If it doesn't give there, try somewhere else. If it does, follow the gap.

MAKING IT HAPPEN: Your Weekly Strategy

Here's what I'd encourage this week. Find one thing that's stuck and shrink the question. Don't ask how to fix the whole thing. Ask what can move in the next hour. If the answer's still too big, shrink it again until it's slightly boring and genuinely doable. Then do that one thing before you do anything else today.

Remember, momentum doesn't always arrive before action. Quite often, action is what creates it.
