I want to share something that took me years to figure out, and it's embarrassingly simple once you see it.

Early in my career, I used to freeze when big problems landed on my desk. Not small problems. Small problems I could handle. I'm talking about the ones that arrive with no obvious starting point, no clear owner, and a deadline that makes your stomach drop. The kind where you sit down, open a blank document, stare at it for twenty minutes, and then go make a cup of tea because your brain just refuses to engage.

I thought that was a me problem. I thought I wasn't smart enough, or experienced enough, or something enough to deal with things at that level. I genuinely believed that the people above me had some ability I didn't have. That they could look at a massive, messy situation and just know what to do.

They couldn't. Nobody can. What they could do, and what I eventually learned to do, was something much simpler.

They broke it down.

Not in a clever, strategic, framework-on-a-whiteboard kind of way. In a basic, almost boring way. They looked at the big impossible thing and asked one question: what is the smallest piece of this I can actually do something about right now?

That's it. That's the whole skill.

Marie Forleo wrote a book called Everything Is Figureoutable, and the title alone changed how I think about work. The idea came from her mother, who grew up with very little and taught herself to fix everything in the house. Roofs, bathrooms, broken radios. No training. No YouTube tutorials. This was the 1980s. When Marie asked her how she could do all these things she'd never been taught, her mum said something along the lines of: nothing in life is that complicated. You just roll up your sleeves, get in there, and do it. Everything is figureoutable.

That sounds like a motivational poster. But there's a real reason it works, and it has nothing to do with mindset.

When a big problem lands in front of you and you can't quickly see the solution, your brain registers it as a threat. Not a metaphorical threat. A real one. The same part of your brain that handles physical danger kicks in, and it triggers the same response: fight, flight, or freeze. And for most of us sitting at a desk, it's freeze. That blank document you've been staring at, the tea you went to make, the way you suddenly need to reorganise your inbox, that's your brain's threat response. It's not laziness or a lack of ability. Your brain is literally protecting you from something it thinks is dangerous.

This is why breaking it down works. When you take a massive, overwhelming problem and reduce it to one small concrete step, your brain stops treating it as a threat. One small step feels safe. Your thinking brain re-engages, and you can actually move.

And once you start, something else happens. You solve one small part, and the next part becomes clearer. Then the next. The problem doesn't shrink, but your understanding of it grows with every step. Clarity comes from doing, not from thinking harder.

I've seen this play out on every difficult project I've ever worked on. The ones that felt impossible at the start were never solved by someone sitting in a room and thinking their way through the whole thing. They were solved by someone picking the first piece, doing something about it, learning from what happened, and then picking the next piece. Over and over until the big scary thing wasn't scary anymore.

And here's the part that surprised me. You don't need to see the full path before you start walking. You just need to see the next step. The rest reveals itself as you move. You will never feel ready. Start anyway. The confidence comes after, not before.

So if you're sitting on something right now that feels too big, too messy, or too unclear to start, remember what's actually happening. Your brain is trying to protect you. Thank it, then override it. Pick the smallest piece you can see and do something about it. The rest will follow.

That's how things get figured out. Not in one go. One piece at a time.

Think about one big problem you're facing right now, at work or on a personal project. Something that feels stuck. Now ask yourself one question: what is the smallest thing I could do in the next thirty minutes that would move this forward? Not the full plan. Not the ideal solution. Just one concrete step. Write it down, do it, and then ask the question again. You'll be surprised how much ground you cover when you stop waiting for the full picture and just start moving.
