Your phone buzzes and something drops in your stomach before you've even looked at it. You sit through dinner with people you love and realise you haven't heard a word anyone has said. You run the same three versions of how it might go, over and over, and none of them are any more likely than they were yesterday. That's the part nobody trains you for, at work or anywhere else.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">And it leaks into everything else. Decisions that should take ten minutes sit for three days. People who had nothing to do with any of it get the sharp end of your mood. None of that means there's something wrong with you. It's what uncertainty does when you leave it running in the background.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">I drove past my old college this week. It was results day, the same gates I used to queue outside, and it took me straight back to my own.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">I hadn't thought once about what I'd do if the grades came in short. I spent that whole summer hoping, which feels like doing something but isn't.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">The results came in fine. But I don't really remember the relief. What I remember is the weeks before, and how much of that time I gave away to a problem that never arrived.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">Years later I did exactly the same thing, waiting on a decision that would settle whether six months of work moved forward or stopped. I checked my email more times than I want to admit and rehearsed what I'd say either way, but I never once wrote down what I'd actually do if it went against me.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">That one cost me twice. I put off conversations I could have had, kept my answers vague so I wouldn't get ahead of a decision that hadn't landed, and left people stuck behind me because I was stuck behind someone else. Then the answer came back no, and I had nothing to move to.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">It isn't always a decision hanging over you. Sometimes it's a restructure nobody will explain properly, a client who has gone quiet, or a situation everyone can see changing while they carry on as though it isn't. Different situation every time. Same feeling underneath.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">So how do you actually build the kind of calm that holds? I've found it comes down to three things, and none of them are complicated.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">The first is exposure. The people who stay steady when the ship is going down have usually been on a few that went down before. Each time you sit with not knowing and come out the other side, the next one frightens you slightly less. You don't get calm by avoiding uncertain situations. You get it by going through enough of them.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">Early on, when you haven't got many of your own behind you, what I'd encourage is getting close to someone who has. Watch what they actually do when it lands. You won't absorb their steadiness by watching, but you'll stop assuming it's something people are born with. And when you get the choice between the safe piece of work and the one that stretches you, take the stretch. That's how you start getting your own.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">The second is separating what you control from what you don't. Most of the anxiety in uncertainty comes from treating the whole situation as one thing you have no power over. It isn't. The outcome might be out of your hands. Very little else is.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">Do it on paper if you can, not just in your head. Two columns: what's mine to move, and what isn't. Anything landing in the second column you're allowed to put down, at least for now. Everything you actually do today comes out of the first.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">When I finally did this properly, the side I couldn't touch was much shorter than it had felt in my head. The other side had the conversation I'd been putting off, the dependency I could clear, the people I'd need to brief either way. None of it changed the outcome. All of it changed what that week was worth.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">The third, and the one that would have saved me both times, is deciding in advance what you'd do if it goes wrong.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">I call it worst case scenario brainstorming, and I do it on paper. You take the thing you're dreading, assume it has already happened, and work out what you'd actually do on Monday morning. Ten minutes, while you're still calm enough to think. Do it a few times and the worst case stops being a shapeless dread you carry around all week. It becomes a situation with a first step attached.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">And when it's over, compare what you wrote with what actually happened. You only learn from a sinking ship if you look back at it. That's where the judgement comes from.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">None of this guarantees things go your way. You might do all three and still get bad news. But it keeps the uncertainty in check, gives you a first move, and gets you moving again faster. Nobody starts out as the calm one in the room. They get there one sinking ship at a time.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class=""><strong>MAKING IT HAPPEN: Your Weekly Strategy</strong></p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">Pick the thing you're most uncertain about right now. The decision that hasn't landed, the change nobody will explain properly, the conversation you know is coming.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">Then finish this sentence on paper: if this goes against me, my first move is ___.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">Writing it down shrinks it. A vague fear becomes a specific problem with a specific answer. If you can't finish the sentence, you've been avoiding it. Keep it to the first move, because you won't think clearly once the news lands. Do this every time something uncertain comes up. That's how you build resilience. It takes a minute. Almost nobody does it.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class=""><strong>THIS WEEK'S CHEAT SHEETS</strong></p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:16px;" class="">Six new ones went up this week.
